PHILADELPHIA - In their opening meet of the season, the La Salle men's cross country team finished with the top four times on the Valley Green Trail on Friday evening.

Alfredo Santana crossed the finish line first, finishing the 6K at 19:14. Dan Day (19:18), Vince Perozze (19:21), and Ian Barnhill (19:24) finished 2-4.

"For the first race I thought the team looked pretty solid," Santana said. "We had some guys step up and have really good races."

"As a team we want to get everyone where they should be, meaning that we would like everyone to perform up to their potential. If we could do this we are not only going to be a great team we are also going to be hitting the goals we set for each other and for the team."

Ryan Topita (19:33), Brendan Robertson (19:39), and Jimmy Murphy (19:43) were also top 15 finishers on the day.

"I thought the guys ran very well," head coach Dan Ireland said. "It was a good season opener for us."

"Ian Barnhill and Ryan Topita both ran great races," he later remarked. "This is just the start that both of these guys needed."

The dual meet vs. Penn kick-started the Explorer's season, as they prepare to defend their Atlantic 10 title from last fall.

Cross country is back in action next Friday, September 14, when they'll head across town for the Temple Invitational.
