PHILADELPHIA - Alfredo Santana has qualified for the NCAA Men's Outdoor Track and Field Preliminary Championships in the 5000m run, it was announced Thursday. Santana placed first in the race at the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships with a time of 14:25.19.
The Nueva Esperanza product ran a career-best 14:00.93 on April 7 at the Colonial Relays. Santana was named Performer of the Meet at both the A-10 Indoor & Outdoor Championships, winning the 3,000m and 5000m indoors and the 5000m and 10,000m outdoors.
The Philadelphia native will look to become the first Explorer male to qualify for the NCAA Championships - Final Round since Sean Quigley did so in both the 5,000m and 10,000m in 2008. Earlier this week, Santana was named to the A-10 Academic All-Conference team for the second time this season.
The preliminary championships will be held May 23-25. The East Region will take place at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C, where Santana will compete. The west regional will be held at the University of Texas at Austin. The NCAA Championships - Final Round will be hosted by the University of Oregon from June 5-8.
