Explorer Rally Falls Short Against Niagara, 6-5

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle baseball team couldn't complete their comeback as they dropped a 6-5 decision to Niagara at Hank DeVincent Field on Thursday afternoon.

The Explorers scored twice in the bottom of the 9th to make it a one-run game but stranded the tying run on 3rd as NU's Daniel Procoprio (S, 1) induced a fly out and a strikeout to end the game.

The Purple Eagles scored four runs in the 5th inning, although none were earned after a La Salle throwing error put men on 1st and 2nd with nobody out. La Salle starter Luke Reilly (L, 1-1) was charged with five runs (two earned) on five hits and walk while striking out four.

Savakinus and Justin Korenblatt knocked back-to-back homers in the 4th to tie the game at 2-2 after a Mike Furhman solo homer in the 1st and an Owen Dziados RBI double in the 2nd gave Niagara a 2-0 lead. Savakinus also had a sacrifice fly in the 7th that cut the Purple Eagles lead to 6-3.

Niagara reliever Michael Bucci (W, 1-2) tossed 3.1 innings in relief of starter Austin Miller, limiting La Salle to one run on four hits while striking out three.

The Explorers continue their home stand and kick off the Big 5 Baseball Bash with a 3 p.m. first pitch against the Northeastern Terriers at Hank DeVincent Field.
