Pookie Powell (Orlando, Fla. / Dr. Phillips), who spent one season at Memphis, will transfer to La Salle to play men's basketball, head coach
Dr. John Giannini announced today. Powell will sit out the 2015-16 season due to NCAA transfer regulations and will have three seasons of eligibility beginning in 2016-17.
"Pookie is the type of guard that recently helped us get to the NCAA Tournament," Giannini said. "He can dribble, pass and shoot and is a great teammate. I'm very excited about him and expect him to make a very positive impact on our program."
Powell (6-1, 185) appeared in 27 games for the Tigers, starting 11. He averaged 4.3 points and 2.7 assists per game. The Orlando, Fla. native scored a career-high 18 points against USC Upstate on December 17 and dished a career-best nine assists on January 3 versus Tulane.
A top 100 recruit by Scout.com, ESPN.com and Rivals.com, Powell was named the Florida Class 8A Player of the Year and was one of eight finalists for Florida's Mr. Basketball award. He averaged 27.8 points, 5.2 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game as a senior. Powell also connected on 89 three-pointers to earn first team Florida Class 8A All-State honors.
He averaged 19.2 ppg and 6.7 apg. as a junior in helping Dr. Phillips High School to a 24-6 record and a conference and district title. He earned second team Florida Class 8A All-State honors as a junior.
Powell also helped Dr. Phillips advance to the Florida Class 8A state championship game as a sophomore.
