Minutemen Down Explorers 1-0 in Men's Soccer

Philadelphia, PA - The UMass soccer team scored the only goal of the game
with just two seconds remaining in the first half to defeat La Salle
University, 1-0, in Atlantic 10 action on Friday afternoon at Rudd Field.

The loss makes the Explorers 3-7-3 on the season, 1-4-0 in the Atlantic 10.

Both teams played a very cautious, physical contest with the chances being
limited by both teams. Neither team mounted any serious scoring threat until
late in the first half. With just about 15 seconds left in the half,
Massachusetts freshman Michael Donnelly (Warminster, Pa.) played a ball down the middle of the field to a streaking Ptah Myers (Columbus, Ohio). Myers played a low, rolling shot from the top of the box into the lower left corner that beat La
Salle goalie junior Stash Graham with just two seconds to play in the first half
for a 1-0 lead.

The Explorers started attacking in the second half, firing 11 shots, but couldn't
solve the UMass defense. With 12 minutes left in the half, the Minutemen had
a chance to take a 2-0 lead with a 3-on-2 break, but Dan Colwell's (Spencer,
Mass.) shot was into Graham's body, who kept the Explorers within striking
distance with four saves. La Salle then had a shot to tie the game just a
minute later, but senior Tom Kenney's (Philadelphia, PA/Chestnut Hill) shot from inside the box sailed just wide and the Minutemen held on for a 1-0 victory.

The Minutemen outshot the Explorers, 16-14, and drew six corner kicks to La
Salle's three. Colin Burns (Newark, Del.) made four saves to earn his second
shutout of the season and sixth overall for the Minutemen.
