La Salle Men's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to Dayton 1-0

Philadelphia, PA . - The La Salle University Men's Soccer Team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the University of Dayton in double overtime today, Friday, October 24, 2003 at McCarthy Stadium on the campus of La Salle University. The Explorers fall to 3-9-3 on the season and 1-6 in the Atlantic 10 while, Dayton improves to 10-2-2 overall and 5-1-1 in the A-10.

Both teams battled throughout the game, with 29 total fouls being called in an extremely physical contest. The Flyers out-shot the Explorers 18-11 and took two more corner kicks than La Salle. The Explorers junior goalie Stash Graham (Tampa, FL/Jesuit) accumulated fives saves in the game as did Dayton's sophomore goalie Matt Handy (Houston, TX/Centenary College).

Graham had an amazing save when Dayton junior Joe Hall (Springfield, OH/Springfield Catholic) fired a shot from inside the 18 in the first overtime period. Graham now has 86 saves on the season and 332 in his career, third all time at La Salle in career saves.

La Salle senior Tom Kenney (Philadelphia, PA/Chestnut Hill) recorded three shots in the game, two on goal, including what looked like it could have been the game winner when Kenney won a ball inside the 18, Kenney headed the ball over Handy, who made an acrobatic save to send the game into the final overtime period.

The two teams continued to battle back and forth, playing an evenly matched game, until Dayton junior Jesse Faily (Oklahoma City, OK/Putnam North) crossed the ball to freshman Tony DiBello (Chesterland, OH/Notre Dame) who shot a rocket into the back of the net for the Flyer's tenth win of the season.

La Salle will play it's final home game this Sunday, October 26th at 1:00 p.m. as they host Xavier. This will be the final game for four seniors at McCarthy Stadium including captains Kenney and Matt Hemberger (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) as well as Bob Buoncristiano (Philadelphia, PA/Chestnut Hill) and A.J. Franchini (Wood Ridge, NJ/Don Bosco Prep).
