Philadelphia, PA - The La Salle Explorer field hockey team snapped a five-game losing streak Saturday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field when they picked up their first Atlantic 10 conference win of the season over the visiting Rhode Island Rams.
With 16:32 remaining in the first half, Emily Simone (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon) knocked in an attempted shot from Sara Camilli (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) to get the scoring started. The two teams played much of the first half in the middle of the field, and La Salle took the 1-0 advantage into the break.
In the second half, both teams again struggled to get shots off, but with 9:06 remaining in regulation, Kristy Newell (Mount Joy, PA/Donegal) knocked in a pass from Camilli to give the Explorers a 2-0 cushion.
With time running down, Rhode Island's Kelly Johnson (Lancaster, PA/Conestoga Valley) capitalized on a penalty stroke to avoid the Rams' shutout with 2:35 to play.
The Explorers were awarded a penalty corner with time running out, as Camilli knocked in a pass from Becky Garry (Glenside, PA/Abington) to close out the game at 3-1.
The Explorers will close out the 2003 home season Sunday, October 26th when they host the Massachusetts Minutemen at 12:00 p.m. on Hank DeVincent Field
