Philadelphia, PA - In a must win situation to keep their playoff hopes alive the Explorer field hockey team posted a 2-0 win over visiting Massachusetts. After winning yesterday against Rhode Island, the Explorers are now 2-3 in the Atlantic 10 and are looking to make it 3-3 next week at West Chester in order to advance to the Atlantic 10 playoffs.
Leading the way for La Salle was junior Becky Garry (Glenside, PA/Abington) with a game-winning goal early in the second half and an assist on fellow classmate Sara Camilli's (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) insurance goal with 2:40 left in the second half.
Junior goalie Colleen Bolger (Berlin, NJ/Eastern Regional) stopped 5 Massachusetts shots including a sprawling save late in the second half to record her third shutout of the season. The Explorers dominated most of the game tallying 13 corners and 18 shots to Massachusetts .
La Salle honored their three seniors before the game as it was their last game ever on Hank DeVincent field. Seniors Amanda Spalding (Lansdale, PA/North Penn), co-captain Laura Whitman (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert's), and Tracey Guenther (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland) were all honored by the teammates and coaches and will be missed next year.
The Explorers take on West Chester away November 1st at noon Saturday to determine their post season future.
