La Salle loses in OT at Duquesne

PITTSBURGH, PA (October 5, 2003) - The La Salle University women's soccer team dropped its third consecutive Atlantic 10 contest of the season, as Duquesne captured the match 1-0 in overtime Sunday afternoon on Rooney Field.

The Dukes (6-4-2, 2-0-1 A-10) got the winning goal from sophomore Erica Carey, who booted a 15-yard shot into the lower left hand corner in the 98th minute to take the win. It was her third goal of the season and first game-winning score.

The game saw 85 minutes of potential goal-less play before La Salle missed a prime scoring opportunity shooting wide left with 5:20 remaining on an empty corner of the goal. The Dukes had escaped another Explorer scoring chance when, with 1:25 left, a La Salle shot went just out of reach of the goalkeeper and hit the crossbar.

In the overtime session, La Salle was falled for a foul with 2:05 left in the first OT, setting up a direct kick for Carey. The Dukes' Carey and Lauren Bracco both lined near the ball as Bracco faked the attempt leaving Carey open to move the ball left and take the solid shot for the win.

La Salle (0-8-1, 0-3) now returns home for its next four Atlantic 10 matches, hosting Saint Joseph's Friday, October 10 at 3 pm and Temple, Sunday, October 12 at 1 pm. The following weekend the will host Massachusetts (Fri. 17th, 3 pm) and Rhode Island (Sun. 19th, 1 pm).
