Philadelphia, PA - The La Salle Explorer volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak with a 3-1 win over the visiting Fairleigh Dickinson Knights Tuesday night at Tom Gola Arena. The Explorers now stand at 8-13 overall, while the Knights continue to struggle at 3-19.
The Explorers took command in game one and never looked back, easily downing the Knights 30-24. In game two, the Knights jumped out to an early 4-1 lead. The Explorers tied the game at 10-10 on a Robyn Wright (Salem, OH/Salem) kill. The Knights then went on a 6-1 run to push the score to 16-11 before
La Salle called a time out. The Explorers never recovered, dropping game two 30-20.
In game three, the Knights again took an early lead, but La Salle took the lead at 10-9 on a Kristin Kelsey (Buda, TX/Jack C. Hays) kill. FDU got the game to within three several times, but La Salle took its biggest lead of the game at
26-19 after back-to-back service aces by Bethany Pruetz (Oxford, MI/Oxford). La Salle rolled through game four after taking the lead at 6-5.
Junior Lauren Woods (Akron, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) led all players with 17 kills and was one of four Explorers to reach double figures in kills. Kelsey dropped 16 on the Knights, while Wright contributed 13 and Pruetz added 10. Freshman Caitlin Conner (Willow Springs, IL/Lyons Township) assisted on 55 of La Salle's 70 kills.
On defense, freshman Carolyn Judge (West Chester, PA/Bishop Shanahan) posted a match-high 23 digs, while sophomore Kara Branz (Streator, IL/Streator Township) added 15 and Wright chipped in with 11.
Fairleigh Dickinson's Sharon Becker (Dumont, NJ/Paramus Catholic) led the Knights with 10 kills and 18 digs.
The Explorers will be back in action on the road this weekend when they take on Fordham Friday night at 7:00 and Rhode Island on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
