Posted by: Marc MullenPHILADELPHIA, PA (August 25, 2003) - The La Salle University women's soccer team recorded a 2-1 victory Monday afternoon in a preseason scrimmage at Villanova, a team ranked 22nd by Soccer America and 23rd by Soccer Buzz.
After a scoreless first half, the Wildcats scored first, but the Explorers answered back with two of their own 10 minutes apart. Krista Lee knotted the score at 1-1 on a cross from Lisa Genna and the game-winner was a result of an own goal. Courtney White crossed a ball into the box and a Villanova defender inadvertently headed the ball into the Wildcat goal.
It was a sort of home-coming for first-year head coach Paul Royal, who was an assistant coach for the Wildcats for five seasons. He feels that his players "have really proven to the coaching staff that their willing to be committed to the program."
"We had stellar team defense and if they continue to play with a lot of heart and passion, great things will happen this season."
La Salle's women's soccer program, which returns 17 letterwinners and nine starters this fall, will open its season at Seton Hall on Aug. 29 at 3 p.m. and then return home to face Syracuse, Monday, Sept. 1 at 1 p.m.
