PHILADELPHIA, PA (September 1, 2003) - For the second straight contest, the La Salle women's soccer team did not allow its opponent to score through the first 70 minutes of a game. However Syracuse's Shana Thomas netted a ball in the 72nd minute and the Orangewomen added another one to spoil the Explorers home opener, 2-0.
As at Seton Hall, La Salle and Syracuse struggled to find solid scoring opportunites in the first half as the defenses clamped down allowing just seven shots tallied in the opening frame.
Syracuse (2-0) ended the drought when Kelly Bailie played the ball into the slot on the left side of the field. Thomas was the first to it and pushed it past Explorer goalkeeper Kerry Schamberger to give the Orangewomen a one-goal lead.
With less than four minutes left in the contest, Syracuse added an insurance goal by Stephanie Sybert. Orangewoman Nina Scalzo was fighting for the ball on the left side near the goal line and was able to push it back to Sybert, who shot it to the far post. For each player it was their second goal of the season.
La Salle (0-1-1) will now travel to Greensboro, North Carolina, this weekend where they will take part in the UNC-Greensboro Tournament. The Explorers will face George Mason on Friday at 5 pm and take on Hofstra, Sunday at 12 pm.
