FIeld Hockey Comes Up Short At Penn

La Salle Comes Up Short Against Penn

Philadelphia, PA - Traveling to nearby Penn, the Explorers were looking to make it two in-a-row on Saturday afternoon. La Salle did not find Franklin Field advantageous to their cause, as the Explorers fell to the Quakers 3-1. La Salle drops to 5-3 overall, while the Quakers improve to 3-4 on the season.

After playing more than 30 minutes scoreless, sophomore Emilie Stewart (Hershey, PA/Hershey) ended the scoring drought with 4:21 remaining in the first half to lift the Explorers to a 1-0 lead.

The Quakers retaliated less than four minutes later, when Liz Lorelli (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich Academy) knotted the game a 1-1 with 42 seconds remaining before the break, after Penn was awarded a penalty corner. Penn sophomore Lea Salese (Livingston, NJ/Pingry Academy) shot the ball toward te cage, allowing Lorelli to tip the gball in the net.

Heading into the second half at an even 1-1, the Quakers picked up the pace on offense scoring less than 30 seconds into the period. It was Lorelli again, who netted what would become the game-winning goal off a dish from Sara Shelley (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) to give Penn the 2-1 lead. Salese added an insurance goal at the 67:47 mark, giving the Quakers their second-straight home win.

La Salle goalkeeper Colleen Bolger (Berlin, NJ/Eastern Regional) poted six saves in 70 minutes of play for the Explorers. Penn split its goalkeeping duties, with Amanda Jacobs (Wilimington, DE/Tatnall School) controlling the first half and allowing La Salle's lone goal enroute to two saves. In the second half, freshman Liz Scholossberg (Chevy Chase, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) earned her first collegiate win, making three saves and holding La Salle scoreless in the second half.

The Explorers will have a short rest, as they are back in action tomorrow, Sunday, September 28, 2003 at 12:00 p.m. when they host Virginia Commonwealth at Temple's Geasey Field.
