Philadelphia, PA - The La Salle University Women's Basketball team fell to the George Washington Colonials, today Sunday, January 18, 2004 85-72 in Tom Gola Arena. The Colonials shot over 50% from the field on 30-58 shooting.
La Salle was led by senior Kat Foley (Troy, NY/Averill Park) she was 9-12 from the field and scored a season high 24 points. Foley was a perfect 6-6 from the foul line. Junior co-captain Jill Marano (Crofton, MD/Arundel) talled 18 points in the loss. She was 4-4 from the foul line and has been perfect from the line in the Explorers last six games.
The Explorers kept the game close for the first ten minutes of the game, but the Colonials went on an 11-0 run in the middle of the first half, and the Explorers could not catch up and went into the locker room down 45-29.
La Salle came out strong and beat the Colonials 43-40 in the second half, but could not overcome the first half deficit and fell to the Atlantic 10 powerhouse.
The Colonials were led by Cathy Joens, she finished the game with 27 points and nine rebounds. Three other George Washington players scored in double digits including Valerie Williams with 19, Ugo Oha with 15 and Anna Montanana with 13.
Also scoring in double digits for La Salle was freshman Crista Ricketts (Douglesville, PA/Danile Boone) with ten. Leading rebounder from La Salle was senior co-captain Ekaterina Markova (Sophia, Bulgaria/Vassil Levski) with eight. Markova also added eight points on 4-6 shooting.
This is the fourth straight loss for La Salle and drops them to 8-7 overall and 1-4 in the Atlantic 10 conference. The Explorers will travel across town to Saint Joseph's University for their next contest this Friday, January 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
