Philadelphia, PA - Head Coach John Miller's La Salle Women's Basketball team fell to 1-1 in the Atlantic 10 dropping a 78-67 decision to the Duquesne Dukes. This is the first loss in five games for the Explorers, making them to 8-4 on the season.
La Salle struggled offensively for the entire game, and shot just 31% in the second half, being out scored 38-29. For the game, La Salle shot 37% from the field, as opposed to Duquesne who shot 47%.
The Explorers were led by this week's Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, freshman Crista Ricketts (Douglasville, PA/Daniel Boone) with 18 points and six rebounds. Junior co-captain Jill Marano (Crofton, MD/Arundel) was the only other La Salle player to score in double digits recording 11 points. Marano along with sophomore Davineia Payne (Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) led the team in rebounds both pulling down seven. Payne also led in assists with four and added four points.
Junior Meghan Wilkinson (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) shot 50% from three point land, finishing with nine points. Senior co-captain Ekaterina Markova (Sophia, Bulgaria/Vassil Levski), junior Monica Garrido Sanz (Majadahonda, Madrid/Majadahonda), and freshman Jenna Graber (Highstown, NJ/Peddie School) all added six points in the game. Garrido Sanz led the team in blocks with two.
Duquesne had four different players score in double digits. Candace Futrell led all scorers with 22. Shiri Sharon and Loui Hall both added 16 points while Nicole Sinclair tallied 14. With the victory, the Dukes improve to 5-7 on the season and 1-1 in Atlantic 10 action.
La Salle (8-4) will travel to Fordham this Friday, January 9th and then to Richmond on Monday, January 12th both games set to start at 7:00 p.m.
