PHILADELPHIA, PA - Head Coach Pat Farrell's La Salle University men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Saint Joseph's University Hawks today, Sunday, October 17th. La Salle falls to 7-5-1 on the season and is now 500 hundred in the Atlantic 10 conference at 3-3.
Explorer freshmen Ryan Dougherty (Wilmington, DE/Salesianum), Andrew Perez (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial), and Jeremy Ortiz (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) combined for the first goal of the game. Ortiz played the ball to Perez who crossed the ball to Dougherty for the 1-0 lead at the 27:05 mark.
La Salle held on to the lead until the 32:31 mark when Saint Joseph's Cliff Jones tied the game up at one from Chris Powell. The game remained tied at one through the end of the first period and about 15 minutes into the second half.
The Explorers, who were called for 19 fouls compared to just 15 called on the Hawks, were called for a foul resulting in a direct kick for the Hawks from about 25 yards out. The Hawks John Creed took the kick and it sailed into the top left hand of the goal passed the out reached hands of La Salle senior goalie Stash Graham (Tampa, FL/Jesuit).
La Salle had several opportunities to score in the second half, but Saint Joseph's goalie Chris DiStefano made a few great saves to keep his team ahead. DiStafano finished the game with eight saves, he was faced with 23 shots from the Explorers. Graham finished the game with just two saves as the Hawks only tallied six shots.
This is the second straight 2-1 loss for the Explorers who will look to bounce back this Friday, October 22nd as they host the University of Rhode Island at 3:00 p.m. in McCarthy Stadium.
