Second Half Burst Not Enough as Explorers Fall to Rhody 4-2


PHILADELPHIA, PA - The La Salle University men's soccer team found themselves down 4-0 with 35 minutes remaining in a conference match-up with Rhode Island today, Friday, October 22, 2004. The Explorers stepped it up to score two second half goals, but it was not enough as the dropped their third straight game 4-2 to the Rams.

Rhode Island senior Sasha Gotsmanov, who leads the Atlantic 10 conference in shots (48), shots per game (3.43), points (32), points per game (2.29), goals (14) and goals per game (1.00), scored the first two goals of the game for the Rams. The senior stand-out scored the first goal of the game at the 4:55 from junior Brian Mazza and the second goal at 17:28 from sophomore Jeffrey Gonsalves.

Leading the game 2-0 Rhode Island freshman Danleigh Borman drilled a shot at La Salle senior co-captain Stash Graham (Tampa, FL/Jesuit). Graham blocked the shot, but Gonsalves was there for the rebound and third goal of the game. Rhody went into the half leading 3-0.

The Rams out-shot La Salle 10-3 in the first period and came out firing and Borman connected with Gonsalves for the second time in the game to score the fourth and final goal for Rhody. The Explorers then stepped up and began to dominate the second period.

La Salle junior Scott Golden (Tampa, FL/Jesuit) took a corner kick and hit a perfect ball to senior co-captain Kevin Coleman (Media, PA/Penncrest) who headed the ball in for the Explorers first goal of the game. The Explorers trailed the Rams 4-1 with just about 31 minutes left to play.

The Explorers kept their intensity high as they out-shot the Rams 8-6 in the second half and continued to try and even the score. Junior Josh France (Wilmington, DE/Salesianum) headed a ball over a Rhode Island defender to fellow junior Ryan Moseley (Nassau, Bahamas/Queens College) who tallied the second goal of the game for La Salle.

The score remained 4-2 for the final twelve minutes of the game as the Explorers dropped to 7-6-1 on the season and 3-4-0 in the A-10 conference. Freshman Kyle Perdelwitz (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) came in to the game in the 69th minute to replace Graham at goal. Graham finished the game with seven saves as he faced 14 of the Rams 16 total shots. Perdelwitz tallied just one save in the loss while Rhode Island goalie Dean Ruddy accumulated four saves.

La Salle continues action at home as they host the University of Massachusetts this Sunday, October 24th at 1:00 p.m. Before the game, La Salle head coach Pat Farrell along with the La Salle athletic department will honor its seven graduating seniors.
