Winston-Salem, NC - The La Salle Explorer field hockey team traveled south on Sunday to take on field hockey powerhouse Wake Forest at Kentner Stadium. The Explorers were the latest victims of the Demon Deacons, as Wake Forest handed La Sall a 5-0 loss. The Explorers became the 35th consecutive non-conference opponent to fall prey to the Demon Deacons. La Salle now stands a 4-7 overall, while the Demon Deacons improved to 11-2.
Maeka Boreel netted her first collegiate goal and added two assists for Wake Forest, in the Demon Deacons fourth shut out this season. Boreel opened Deacon scoring just 41 seconds into the game. On her first shot of the game, Boreel slipped the ball past Explorers' keeper Colleen Bolger. With the goal, now all Deacon starting midfielders and forwards have scored at least once this season.
Kelly Dostal received a pass from Boreel to connect for her 18th goal this season. Dostal leads the ACC and the nation in scoring.
On the second penalty corner of the first half, Kristi Harshman injected to stopper Boreel. Boreel passed to Lauren Crandall who capitalized for the third Deacon goal of the game. The goal was Crandall's fourth this season.
Wake Forest headed into the break with the 3-0 lead. The Deacons did not allow the Explorers a shot in the first 35 minutes of play and out-shot La Salle 12 to zero in the first half, and took three penalty corners to La Salle's zero.
La Salle crossed midfield once in the second half, but the ball got ahead of the attackers and Kristina Gagliardi slid out to send the ball to the sideline. The Explorers inbounded but Harshman was there to send things back to Deacon territory.
Wake Forest put the first points of the second half on the board when Bolger tried to come out to defend Dostal, but Dostal dribbled around and scored her 19th goal of the season. She needs just four more to break the all time Deacon career goals record (76).
Moments later, Dostal chipped to Tracey Scott who scored her second goal of the season to give the Deacons the 5-0 edge.
La Salle swapped goalkeepers with nine minutes left. Sarah Kearney played the last minutes of the game for the Explorers.
The Deacons took nine shots in the second half and four penalty corners.
La Salle managed one penalty corner. Wake Forest dominated from start to finish, out-shooting the Explorers 21 to zero. Bolger posted four saves. Kristina Gagliardi played all 70 minutes in goal for the Deacons but faced no shots. She is credited with her fourth career shut out and her 11th career win.
Continuing on the road, the Explorers will visit the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Sunday with a 12:00 p.m. start.
