Explorers Earned a 2-1 Overtime Victory Over West Chester
Philadelphia, PA - The La Salle Explorer field hockey team bid farewell to seven seniors prior to Saturday's Atlantic 10 conference match up with the West Chester Golden Rams at Hank DeVincent Field. The Explorers sent the seniors off in dramatic fashion, earning a 2-1 victory in overtime. The Explorers end the
2004 season with a 6-13 overall record and a 2-4 conference record, while the Golden rams end with a 3-14 and 2-4 record.
Senior Sara Camilli (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) returned to the Explorer line up after missing the past nine games with a broken foot. Camilli made her presence felt in the first half, after fellow senior Kristy Newell (Mount Joy, PA/Donegal) crossed a pass in front of the goal that Camilli connected on and netted the Explorers first goal of the afternoon.
Camilli's goal proved to be the only scoring for either team in the first half. In the second half, the Explorers seemed to dominate the offense, out shooting the Golden Rams 10-4. With 20:08 remaining in the second half, La Salle goalkeeper Colleen Bolger (Berlin, NJ/Eastern Regional) was called for batting the ball down to the ground and West Chester was awarded a penalty stroke. West Chester sent Sarah Mizenko (Hanover, PA/South Western) into the game to attempt the penalty stroke and Mizenko pushed the shot to the lower left corner and Bolger easily stopped the shot.
With the score sitting a 1-0, West Chester's Jennifer Doody (Oreland, PA/Springfield-Montco) tied the score on a pass from Jen McGinley (New Holland, PA/Hempfield) with 16 minutes remaining in regulation.
Moving into the overtime period, sophomore Amy Comstock (Orangeville, PA/Benton) wasted no time for the Explorers, sinking a shot just 1:04 into the extended period to give La Salle a 2-1 victory to end the season.
Today's game marked the last appearance by seven seniors. The coaches, players and La Salle community wish good luck to: Colleen Bolger, Sara Camilli Becky Garry, Sarah Kearney, Kristy Newell, Brandi Reed, and Lindsey Tyler!
See you next season!
