Abrams Named MAAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year

Philadelphia, PA -- After a season spent terrorizing defenses from nearly every conceivable position, La Salle quarterback/receiver/defensive back/ special teams player Vernard Abrams (Philadelphia, PA/Cardinal Dougherty) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Year.

Abrams, an All-MAAC second team selection at safety last season, made the switch and ignited an Explorer offense that averaged 29.7 points and 408.8 yards per game. At quarterback, he led La Salle's passing attack with 1,315 yards and 9 touchdowns. His 131.5 efficiency rating was tops in the conference.
He was also second on the team in rushing with 49.3 yards per game, and was second in the MAAC with 195.4 yards of total offense per game.

Fittingly, his favorite target - senior receiver John Zabel (Ellicot City, MD/Mt. Hebron) - also joined him on the All-MAAC First Team. Zabel caught 50 balls for 925 yards and 7 touchdowns.

A trio of Junior offensive linemen, Joe Cifelli (West Essex, NJ/West Essex), Bill Kuchinsky (Atlantic City, NJ/Atlantic City) and Corey Watkins (Aston, PA/Cardinal O'Hara), who busted open the holes that allowed Abrams and the offense to operate, were named to the All-MAAC second team.
