Philadelphia, PA - Seniors Caitlin DeJong (Lansing, IL/Marian Catholic), Amanda Woods (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas), and Lauren Woods (Akron, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) competed in their final home match of their collegiate career Tuesday night at Tom Gola Arena as the La Salle Explorers were clipped by the visitng Temple Owls 3-0. The Explorers are now 8-3 overall and 1-12 in the Atlantic 10, while the Owls improve to 12-16 overall and 9-3 in the conference.
The Explorers opened the match scoring the first point, but then fell behind by four points. La Salle teetered between a three and four point deficit before the La Salle called a time out with the score 20-16. The Explorers scored the next point, but the Owls increased their lead to five at 24-19 and La Salle could not recover, dropping game one 30-26.
In the game, the Owls scored the next point, but La Salle took a lead 3-2 and then again at 6-5. Temple took the lead back for good at 9-8 and extended its lead to has much at 12 points, to end game two 30-18.
La Salle jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in game three, but the Owls answered right back, matching the Explorers four points to tie the game. After trading points the next few serves, the Owls took the lead at 7-6 and controlled the rest of the game, claiming a 30-15 victory to win the match.
Lauren Woods and Samantha Takacs (Columbus, OH/Bishop Watterson) led the Explorers with nine kills each, and junior Abby Means (Stevens, PA/Cocalico) dropped an additional eight kills on the Owls. Amanda Woods assisted on 30 of La Salle's 35 kills.
On defense, DeJong tied a match-high 13 digs, while sophomore Kristen Kelsey (Buda, TX/Jack C. Hays) contributed eight in return to the Explorer line-up.
Temple's Yue Liu (TianJing, China/Tianjing City P.E.) led all players with 18 kills, and Zhen Jia Liu (Shanghai, P.R. China/Shanghai Sports College) tallied 17 kills in the Owls win.
On defense, Zhen Jian Liu matched DeJong's 13 digs, while Yue Liu added 10 and recorded Temple's lone block of the game.
The volleyball team hits the road for the final two matches of the season when they travel to Fordham on Friday at 7:00 p.m., followed by Rhode Island on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
