PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Atlantic 10 Conference announced Thursday that La Salle lacrosse sophomore midfielder Kate Henwood (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) was named to the All-Conference Team for her accomplishments on the lacrosse field this season.
A starter in all 15 games at the midfield position, Henwood finished the season in second place in scoring for the Explorers with 33 points, including 23 goals and 10 assists - the top mark on the La Salle squad this year. She finished 19th in the conference in overall scoring, while checking in with the 10th-best mark in conference games. Henwood scored points in all but one game this season, and registered goals in 12 of the Explorers' (2-13, 2-5 A-10) 15 contests.
Henwood's efforts in La Salle's two victories this season earned her Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week accolades (Apr. 14). In an April 9 showdown with cross-town rival Saint Joseph's, her goal with 3:00 left in regulation rallied the Explorers from an unprecedented 8-0 deficit and sent the game into overtime. Henwood tallied two goals, two assists (four points) and five ground balls in the 11-8 overtime victory, the first win in first-year head coach Julie Weiss' career.
Two days later, Henwood posted a six-point (four goals, two assists) effort in the Explorers' 12-6 romp over A-10 rival George Washington. She also scooped up three ground balls in the contest, and Henwood won both face-offs she took.
In addition to her offensive skills, Henwood displayed exceptional ability as a two-way midfielder on the defensive side of the ball, too. She tallied 15 caused turnovers, which tied for second on the La Salle team. Her 35 ground balls and 25 draw controls ranked third on the team for the season.
Weiss' Explorers are slated to return every player for the 2004 season, as there were no seniors on this year's squad. With a solid nucleus returning, the future of La Salle's women's lacrosse team, which lost five games by just one or two goals, is very bright.
