Posted by: Meaghann Schulte (215-951-1633)Philadelphia, PA - The La Salle University Baseball team kicked off conference action with a pair of losses to Atlantic 10 opponent Temple University. The Owls swept the Explorers 10-5 and 4-1.
La Salle junior Anthony Boscaglia (Vineland, NJ/Sacred Heart) started on the mound in game one. He pitched in five innings and struck out four batters. He was relieved by freshman Gerard Breslin (Havertown, PA/Havertown), junior Matt Kirsch (West Chester, PA/Archbishop Carroll), and sophomore John Reifsnyder (Flourtown, PA/La Salle).
The Owls got on the scoreboard first in game one, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth, but La Salle answered right back with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. The two runs came off a two-run home by senior Scott Gehringer (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen). Gehringer finished the game 2-3 with three runs and three runs batted in.
The score remained tied at two until the sixth inning, when Temple scored four runs, compared to only one run by the Explorers in the sixth. Heading into the seventh and final inning, the Owls led 6-3, but managed to score four more runs, to got up 10-3. La Salle knocked in two in the seventh, but the Owls held on for the victory.
Temple came out swinging in game two as well, as they again got on the scoreboard first and early. The Owls scored the first three runs of the game, and went into the bottom of the sixth winning 3-1. La Salle junior Ryan Parfit (Flourtown, PA/La Salle) then scored the Explorers only run of the game off a senior Jay Snyder (Milton, PA/Milton) single.
The Owls answered back and scored their fourth run of the game in the top of the seventh and went on to win their second Atlantic 10 game 4-1.
La Salle senior Bryan Harvey (Doylestown, PA/La Salle) started on the mound and pitched in over six innings. He struck out three batters.
The Explorers are now 12-6-1 on the season and 0-2 in the conference. They will host Temple tomorrow, Sunday, March 28, 2004 in a single game starting at 2:00 p.m.
