Explorers Get First Conference Win

Philadelphia, PA - The La Salle University baseball team grabbed its first conference victory of the season as they split a doubleheader today, Saturday, April 10th, 2004 with the Saint Bonaventure University Bonnies. The Explorers won game one 8-6, and fell in game two 8-7.

La Salle junior Ryan Parfit (Flourtown, PA/La Salle) started game one off with a homer and gave his team an early 1-0 lead. They held on to that lead until the fourth inning when they added six more runs to take a commanding 7-0 lead.

Four of the six runs scored in the fourth inning came off back to back homeruns by sophomore Kevin McCarthy (Ambler, PA/Wissahicken) and senior John Snyder (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township). McCarthy hit a three run homer to put La Salle up 6-0 and Snyder added the seventh run for the Explorers.

The Bonnies scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth as well as in the sixth and seventh innings, but La Salle held on and won its first conference game 8-6.

La Salle junior Anthony Boscaglia (Vineland, NJ/Sacred Heart) started on the mound for La Salle. He earned his third win of the season as he struck out five batters in five innings. Freshman Gerard Breslin (Havertown, PA/Haverford) came in to close for La Salle and recorded his fifth save of the year.

La Salle senior Bryan Harvey (Doylestown, PA/La Salle) started on the mound in game two. He pitched in five and two thirds innings and sturck out six batters. Breslin came in again to close, pitching in the final two innings. Bresling struck out five batters.

The Bonnies got on the scoreboard first in game two as they scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth. La Salle answered right back and scored three runs of its own in the top of the fifth.

The Explorers first three batters of the fifth inning, sophomore John Reifsnyder (Flourtown, Pa./La Salle), sophomore Mike Essery (Havertown, PA/Cardinal O'Hara), and Parfit, all reached after being hit by the pitcher. The three then all scored to tie the game at three heading into the sixth inning.

Saint Bonaventure scored two runs in the sixth inning, but La Salle answered back and gained the lead scoring four runs in the seventh. Two of the four runs came off a sophomore George Hudock (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) homer. La Salle went into the eighth inning with a 7-6 lead after the Bonnies scored a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Saint Bonaventure then scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth and held on for the 8-7 victory, and took the series 2-1 after defeating the Explorers in game one yesterday, Friday, April 9th, 8-7.

La Salle is now 14-14-2 overall and 1-8 in the conference. The Explorers will host Delaware State this Wednesdaym April 14th at 3:30 p.m. at Hank DeVincent Field.
