Explorers Drop 19-8 Decision to Rams Despite 4 Homers

Philadelphia, PA - The University of Rhode Island Rams finished the sweep of the La Salle University Explorers today, Monday, April 5, 2004 with a 19-8 victory that saw seven homeruns.

The loss drops the Explorers overall record to 13-10-2, and they remain winless in the Atlantic 10 conference at 0-6.

La Salle junior Ryan Parfit (Flourtown, PA/La Salle) started the game off with a one run homer to left field, giving his team the early 1-0 lead. The Explorers left the first inning with one other run as sophomore George Hudock (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) drove in fellow sophomore Mike Essery (Havertown, PA/Cardinal O'Hara). La Salle took an early 2-0 lead.

The Explorers then scored five runs in the second inning. They started the inning off on the right foot again as senior Scott Gehringer (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) drilled a homerun to put the team up 3-0. Essery then singled to center field and tallied his lone RBI of the game as senior Eric Ruhland (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) scored the Explorers second run of the inning.

Essery then stole second and freshman Rich Prall (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) was hit by a pitch. Senior tri-captain Jay Snyder (Milton, PA/Milton) then hit a three run homer to put the Explorers up 7-0 heading into the third inning.

The Rams answered right back scoring three runs in both the third and fourth innings. The three in the fourth inning came off a Scott Brown three run homer. Brown hit two homeruns in the game. La Salle was still in the lead, but the Rams cut the lead to one, as the Explorers were up 7-6 heading into the fifth inning.

The Explorers scored their eighth and final run when Hudock homered down the right field line. Hudock finished the game 2-4, he scored one run and drove in tow runs. Gehringer was 3-5, scoring one run and tallying one run batted in. Essery finished a perfect 2-2 from the plate, he scored two runs and batted one in.

La Salle senior Bryan Harvey (Doylestown,PA/La Salle) started on the mound, he struck out in five batters in just under four innings. Harvey was relieved by fellow senior Chris Hughes (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven), junior Matt Kirsch (West Chester, PA/Archbishop Carroll), freshman Gerard Breslin (Havertown, PA/Haverford), and sophomore John Reifsnyder (Flourtown, PA/La Salle).

The Explorers will host the University of Pennsylvania tomorrow, Tuesday, April 6th at 3:30 p.m. in a doubleheader.
