Posted by: Meaghann Schulte (215-951-1633)Philadelphia, PA - La Salle freshman Gerard Breslin (Havertown, PA/Haverford) earned his third win of the season on the mound as the baseball team defeated the Saint Joseph's University Hawks 12-10 today, Wednesday, May 12th.
La Salle sophomore Mike Essery (Havertown, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) went 4-5 from the plate. He scored two of La Salle's 12 runs and drove one in. Freshman John Vincent (Glen Burnie, MD/Cardinal Gibbons) was 3-5 with one run scored and four runs batted in. Fellow freshman Billy Kern (Northfield, NJ/Mainland) was 3-4 and scored two runs.
The Hawks took an early lead going into the second inning up 1-0, but La Salle scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth for the 4-1 lead. La Salle held on to the lead until the Hawks scored four runs and took a 7-6 lead goint into the sixth. Saint Joseph's tallied two more in the sixth and took a 9-6 lead.
The Explorers took the lead back with a four run seventh inning, but the Hawks tied it up in the top of the eighth. La Salle then scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth and held on for the 12-10 victory.
The Explorers (20-25-2) will travel to Richmond this weekend as they finish up the season. The Spiders will host La Salle in a doubleheader on Saturday, May 15th and in one single game on the 16th.
