Philadelphia, PA - In the 2004 season opener, the La Salle Explorer field hockey team hosted nearby Drexel at Temple's Geasey Field. On this hot an humid Saturday afternoon, the Explorers fell prey to the Dragons, dropping the opener 2-1.
After playing even for more than 20 mintues, the Drexel's Elizabeth Seidel (Virginia Beach, VA/Kempsville) capitalized on a deflected pass after the Dragons' penalty corner attempt to break the scoring drought and put Drexel up 1-0 with 13:43 remaining in the first half.
Both the Explorers and Dragons kept the ball in the midfield for much of the half, with both teams attempting just three shots on goal prior to intermission.
In the second half, the tide seemed to be shifting to La Salle, as the Explorers earned six defensive corners to the Dragons one. But once again Drexel made an offensive surge, and junior Amanda Mouser (Havertown, PA/Haverford) found herself with a penalty stroke opportunity. As La Salle goalkeeper Colleen Bolger (Berlin, NJ/Eastern Regional) prepared, Mouser hit the post of cage to halt Drexel from scoring its second goal with 18:44 remaining.
Less than two minutes later, Drexel sophomore Rachel Zeldin (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) guided a pass to freshman Emily Horvat (Allentown, PA/William Allen) to give the Dragons a 2-0 advantage.
As time ticked away, the Explorers, looking to avoid the shutout took advantage of a penalty corner with 5:32 remaining in the second half, when sophomore Allison Geiger (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) found the back of the cage with the help of Amy Comstock (Orageville, PA/Benton) and senior Sara Camilli (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy).
Despite La Salle's push at the end, the Dragons claimed the 2-1 victory.
The Explorers will try again for their first win of the season Thursday, September 2nd, when they travel to Lafayette for an evening game at 7:00 p.m.
