Temple's Hannigan Repeats as Soccer Seven Player of the Year

Philadelphia, Pa.-
Senior Patrick Hannigan of Temple University has won the 2004 Chris Jones Award presented to the Philadelphia Soccer Seven's Player of the Year. Hannigan, a goalkeeper from Philadelphia, Pa. and a graduated of Frankford High School, was a co-winner of the award a year ago as well. This season, Hannigan led the Owls into the Atlantic 10 title game for the second-straight year. Hannigan had a league-high eight shutouts for the Owls and had a 1.00 goals-against average. He compiled an 11-7-2 record. Temple finished the year 12-8-2 and was voted the Soccer Seven Team of the Year by the league's coaches.

Coach Dave MacWilliams of Temple University was the winner of the Bill Harris Coach of the Year Award for the second-straight season. MacWilliams led the Owls into the Atlantic 10 Championship game for the second-straight year. It was the first time since 1987 that Temple has posted back-to-back 10-win seasons.

Villanova University freshman Dan DeMasters was named the 2004 Freshman of the Year. The Littiz, Pa., native led the Wildcats with five goals and 12 points. He was fifth in the league in scoring and led Villanova to a berth in the Big East Conference Tournament. DeMasters was also named Third-Team All-Big East.

Temple Falls to GW in Atlantic 10 Finals, 2-0

MOUNT VERNON, VA -
Junior midfielder Steve Brown tallied in the ninth minute and that was all George Washington needed as the Colonial defense shut down the Temple Owl offense in capturing the 2004 Atlantic 10 Conference men's soccer championship with a 2-0 win Sunday afternoon in front of a partisan crowd of 811 at the GW Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. The Owls end their season with a 12-8-2 record while the Colonials (9-8-4) extend their unbeaten string to nine matches and advance to the NCAA Tournament.

The game started off with both teams having early chances on direct kicks. After GW failed on its opportunity in the first minute, the Owls Tony Donatelli blasted one high that was saved by junior keeper Derek Biss in the third minute.

In the ninth minute, Temple senior captain Steven Wacker made a save in the box off a GW shot. The rebound went to Miller, who headed it to Brown in the box. Brown then drilled it into the top right corner for the game-winner.

The Owls pressured the Colonial defense the remainder of the half, compiling seven of their season-high 13 corner kicks in the period. The GW defense, however, did not give the Cherry and White attackers any solid scoring chances. The Owls best opportunity was a Donatelli shot in the final seconds from 20 yards out that Biss dove to his left to stop.

GW junior defender Andre Chapman, who it the post in the 34th minute, broke free on a counterattack in the 65th minute, splitting two Temple defenders to go in alone on Patrick Hannigan. Chapman was true on the shot for his sixth goal to give the Colonials a 2-0 lead.

Instead of hanging their heads, the Owls continued to pressure with senior Nate Webb hitting the crossbar in the 78th minute and then drilling one in the 83rd minute that Biss saved. Sophomore defender Chris Shelton blasted a shot with four minutes remaining for the Owls final scoring opportunity.

Temple out-shot GW, 7-5, in the second half, and had six second half corners to the Colonials' one.

Hannigan, who joined Donatelli and Shelton on the all-tournament team, made three saves in his final collegiate game. Webb, Wacker and defender Andy Watto also donned the Temple uniform for the final time in the contest.

Biss, who made five saves in goal for GW, was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Championship.

Penn Ends Season With a 1-0 Win vs. Harvard

Philadelphia -
Sophomore Andy Howard's first goal of the season came just at the right moment as he helped the University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team snap a six-game skid with a 1-0 victory over Harvard this afternoon on Senior Day.

The lone goal of the game came just 9:13 into the contest as Howard knocked down a direct kick by senior Josh Duyan and blasted it by Harvard (9-7-1, 3-3-1 Ivy League). The Crimson had their opportunities to score, taking nine shots, but sophomore keeper Daniel Cepero made key stops. Both teams had nine shots apiece, while Harvard held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Donatelli's Hat Trick Leads Temple Into Atlantic 10 Finals

Junior Tony Donatelli, left off the first team all-conference squad, is leaving his mark on this A-10 Championship. The Temple midfielder tallied a natural hat-trick to lead the third-seeded Owls to a 3-0 win over second-seeded Dayton on a rainy Friday afternoon at George Washington's Mount Vernon Soccer Field. The Cherry and White advance to the A-10 finals for the second straight season where they meet fourth-seeded George Washington on its home field Sunday afternoon.

Donatelli has been on fire of late on the offensive end. The Owls' leading scorer has scored four of his team-high six goals over the last week, and has had a hand in every goal Temple has tallied in this championship. He now has 21 points to rank ninth in the A-10 while his nine assists put him third in the category.

Donatelli's first goal came off a direct kick right outside the Dayton box. The Glenside, PA native took a touch pass from sophomore Ryan Heins and blasted it past the wall of Flyer defenders and goalkeeper Matt Troop (1 save) to give the Owls a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute.

The Owl midfielder then finished a pass in front of the box from senior Nate Webb in the 38th minute to give Temple a two-goal advantage. Junior Timmy Greer also earned an assist on the goal due to his long pass into the box.

The hat-trick, which tied an A-10 record for goals in a tournament game, was completed in the 80th minute as Donatelli converted on a penalty kick. The PK was awarded due to Webb being fouled in the box by Troop.

Senior Patrick Hannigan also tied an A-10 record with his second shutout of the tournament. The Owl keeper, who recorded two saves in the match, now has eight shutouts on the season and 20 for his career.

Temple (12-7-2) will now try to win its first A-10 title when it takes on GW (8-8-4), which advanced to the final by virtue of a penalty kick decision over top-seed Duquesne in the first match of the day. The Owls fell to the Colonials, 1-0, at Mount Vernon on October 29. GW's win over Temple was the fourth of a current eight-match unbeaten streak.

Temple Edges La Salle in Atlantic 10 Tournament Play

Sophomore back Chris Shelton may not score often, but when he does it is always big. His latest goal came in the 60th minute of Temple's opening round Atlantic 10 Championship match against city-rival La Salle held Thursday afternoon at George Washington's Mount Vernon campus. Shelton's tally broke a scoreless tie and lifted the Owls to a 1-0 win over the Explorers. With the victory, Temple (11-7-2) advances to play second-seeded Dayton Friday at 1:00 p.m.

Shelton, known mainly for helping the Cherry and White defense compile a stingy 0.97 goals against average, headed home a loose ball in the box off a pass from junior Tony Donatelli. It was the second career goal for Shelton, a product of nearby Washington Township HS (NJ), with the other coming in a 1-0 win over Duquesne on October 22.

Temple dominated the first 45 minutes of play, but was unable to put one past senior goalkeeper Stash Graham. The A-10 leader in saves with 111, Graham made five of his nine stops in the first half and set a new La Salle career saves mark in the process.

In the second half, the Explorers jumped out early, testing senior keeper Patrick Hannigan. Named A-10 Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season the night before, Hannigan was equal to Graham, recording three saves in the match, including a diving stop in the first five minutes of the second half to keep it scoreless.

The Owls out-shot the Explorers, 22-14, with Donatelli accounting for a game-high six shots. Sophomore midfielder Ryan Heins added four shots for Temple while Josh France led LSU with three shots.
