Annapolis, MD - Freshman Kyle Perdelwitz (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) recorded his first collegiate shut out as an Explorer as La Salle tied Navy 0-0 in double overtime tonight, Saturday, September 18th in Annapolis.
La Salle head coach Pat Farrell started five freshmen in the game, including regulars Walter McMahon (Norristown, PA/Methacton), Jeremy Ortiz (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Mike Lehr (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle). McMahon has started all six games for the Explorers, Ortiz has started five and Lehr has started in the last three. Perdelwitz and Geoff Schaeffer (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional) bot recorded their first starts of the season.
The Explorers had a fair amount of possession in the extremely windy conditions, recording 14 shots in the game. La Salle accumulated five shots on goal and came within inches of scoring when junior Ryan Moseley (Nassau, Bahamas/Queens College HS) fired a shot about 25 minutes into the game that hit the post. Perez was right there for the rebound and cracked a shot into the outside of the net.
La Salle came close again in the second half to scoring when sophomore Matt Kelly (Philadelphia, PA/La Salle) lofted a ball to junior Josh France (Wilmington, DE/Salesianum) who shot the ball to the oppostie side of the goal, but Navy's goalie Frank DiFilippo made an amazing save. DiFilippo finished the game with five saves.
Perdelwitz, a New Jersey All-State selection as a high school senior, tallied eight saves in his first appearance in the blue and gold as the Explorers avoided their third loss of the season.
The Explorers' defense had another impressive showing behind the charge of senior co-captain Kevin Coleman (Media, PA/Penncrest). Coleman continues his remarkable play, winning head balls and challenging opponents as well as his own team mates to prove their defensive talent.
La Salle is now 3-2-1 and will head to Philadelphia University on Monday, September 20th for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
