Volleyball Sweeps St. Francis

Philadelphia, PA - The La Salle Explorer volleyball team got back on the winning side of the record books Tuesday night at Tom Gola Arena when they downed the St. Francis (NY) Terriers, 3-0. The Explorers claimed victory by scores of 30-21, 30-24, and 30-23. With the win, La Salle is back at the .500 mark with a 6-6 record, while the Terriers remain winless at 0-10.

It was all La Salle in game one, as the Explorers jumped to an early 6-3 lead and never looked back. The Explorers extended their lead to eight points at 20-12 before St. Francis closed the gap to 21-16, but the Explorers pushed ahead to build their lead to as much as nine points (26-17).

In game two St. Francis saw its first lead of the match at 3-2 and 5-4. The Terriers went ahead by three points at 8-5 and 9-6. La Salle climbed back to take the lead at 10-9. Senior Lauren Woods (Akron, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) posted a solo block at 16-13 before sophomore Kristen Kelsey (Buda, TX/Jack C. Hays) landed four kills to push the lead to 21-15. The Explorers saw their biggest lead of game two at 23-15 off a Kara Branz (Streator, IL/Streator Township) kill.

The Terriers were looking to push for a game four as they opend game three with a lead that ballooned to five points at 10-5. The Explorers got back into the mix when Woods knocked down three kills to tie the score at 11-11. It was all Woods in game three, landing another five kills and a solo block to propel the Explorers to victory.

La Salle was led by Woods with 19 kills on 41 attempts with just two errors for a .415 hitting percentage. Kelsey added 10 kills of her own, with four of those kills coming late in game two. Senior Amanda Woods (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) assisted on 50 of La Salle's 61 kills and landed five kills to her own credit.

On deense, senior libero Caitlin DeJong (Lansing, IL/Marian Catholic) led all players with 20 digs, while sophomore Carolyn Judge (West Chester, PA/Bishop Shanahan) tallied 13 digs. Woods stopped three solo shots and paired with junior Abby Means (Stevens, PA/Cocalico) for La Salle's only assisted block of the match.

The Terriers were led by Malgorzata Szyszka (Stated Island, NY/Port Richmond) with 17 kills.

On defense for St. Francis, Lucyna Halys (Brooklyn, NY/Grover Cleveland) led the Terriers with 16 digs, while Lydia Ann Harris (Castries, St. Lucia/St. Joseph's) posted 12 digs and Szyszka added 10.

The Explorers return to tournament action this weekend when they travel to Dartmouth to take on Iona on Friday at 4:00 pm, followed by Dartmouth and Harvard on Saturday.
