Philadelphia, PA - With the threat of a massive downpour looming, the Explorers tipped off their first field hockey game at Hank DeVincent Field for the 2004 season on Wednesday afternoon, hosting the Monmouth Hawks. La Salle forgot about the storm as they earned their second win of the season, a 2-1 victory to bring their record to 2-1, while the Hawks drop to 2-4, including and 0-3 record against Atlantic 10 opponents.
After playing in the midfield for much of the first 17 minutes of the game, the Explorers found their way to Monmouth's goal, as Laura Farley (Buke, VA/Robinson Secondary) came off the bench to drill a pass to Amy Comstock (Orangeville, PA/Benton) with 17:08 to play in the first half to give the Explorers a 1-0 edge.
Despite spending time in La Salle's territory, the Hawks managed to launch just three shots in the first half, but one shot by Katie Levy (Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen) was enough to knot the score with the help of Lansdale's Kelly Balady (Lansdale, PA/Methacton) with 3:58 remaining before the break.
In the second half, the Explorers dominated much of the time, out shooting the Hawks 9-3 in the period. Farley scrambled in front of Monmouth goalkeeper Carrie Colbert (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) before slipping a shot past Colbert to net the game-winning goal with 14:03 left in the contest.
The Explorers will hit the road this weekend to take on Sacred Heart on Saturday at 2:00 pm and Hofstra on Sunday at 2:00 pm. Both games will be played at Hofstra.
