Amherst, MA - The La Salle women's basketball team has dropped yet another close game this time to the University of Massachusetts 67-60. La Salle falls to 6-7 on the season and 0-2 in the conference, this is the first time the Explorers have been below 500 since dropping a two point game to the Pennsylvania Quakers.
The Minutewomen went up by as many as nine points in the first half when the Explorers made a run and took their first lead of the game at the 5:38 mark in the first period. Massachusetts took the lead right back and held on until there was just 2:20 left in the game when La Salle tied the game at 57. But the Minutewomen bounced right back and went on to record their first conference victory.
La Salle was led by sophomore Crista Ricketts (Douglasville, PA/Daniel Boone) with 21 points and seven rebounds. Senior Monica Garrido-Sanz (Majadahonda, Spain/C.B. Majadahonda) led the team in rebounds as she out-rebounded all players on the floor pulling down 12. She also tallied nine points as did juniors Davineia Payne (Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) and Shaune McLaughlin (Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Regional).
La Salle senior Meghan Wilkinson (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) talliled six points in the game and had a team high four assists. The Explorers were an impressive 12-13 from the charity stripe, led by Ricketts who went 9-10. McLaughlin went 2-2 at the 2:20 mark in the second half, which resulted in the only tie in the period.
The Explorers continue conference action as they head to the University of Rhode Island this Sunday, January 9th, 2005 for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
