Navy Sinks Explorers, 3-1

Posted by: Shawn Sweeney

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The La Salle men's soccer team (2-5-2) suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Navy Midshipmen (6-4) at McCarthy Stadium. Navy mounted a three-goal lead that the Explorers could not overcome.

Navy opened the scoring in the 42nd minute when Eric Gorden set up Kenan Knieriem at the top of the goal box. Knieriem unloaded a shot that just got past Explorers goalkeeper Dan Pfeiffer (Warminster, PA/William Tennant).

Navy struck again just after halftime when Travis King found the back of the net off a pass from Addy Strasdas. In the 73rd minute, the Midshipmen added an insurance goal on a header from Danny Cook.

The Explorers got on the board in the 84th minute when Scott Golden's (Tampa, FL/Jesuit) penalty kick was saved by Navy goalie Thomas Jenkins. The rebound caromed out to freshman James Guntle (Great Falls, VA/Georgetown Prep), who put the ball into the net.

Pfeiffer made one save for La Salle, while Jenkins made four stops for the Midshipmen.

The Explorers will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 3:00 p.m. when they host Soccer Seven rival Philadelphia University.
