La Salle Drops 2-1 Decision to Rhode Island

Posted by: Marc Mullen

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Freshman Traci DePasquale's goal in the 37th minute of the contest tied the La Salle University Women's Soccer team with Rhode Island. However, Megan Kasparek's second goal of the game lifted the Rams to a 2-1 victory over the Explorers in Atlantic 10 Conference action, Friday at McCarthy Stadium.

Rhode Island (9-4-1, 5-0-0 A-10) opened the scoring in the 16th minute of play, when Thorunn Jonsdottir's corner kick found the foot of Kasparek and she found the back of the net, for her sixth of the season. It was the seventh first-half goal allowed by the Explorers in A-10 play.

La Salle (4-10-2, 1-4-1 A-10) evened the score when DePasquale tallied her team-tying fourth goal of the season. After two straight shots by senior Alexis Petrucci and sophomore Shelby Reese had been blocked, DePasquale was successful on the third attempt.

The Rams' game-winner was assisted by Melanie Kasparek, Megan's twin sister, and was scored from an almost impossible angle as it appeared Megan was trapped on the end line, but snuck the ball into the far goal at the 65:41 mark of the second half.

The Explorers continued to press looking for the equalizer and actually outshot the Rams 16-11 and an 8-6 shots on goal advantage.

Earning the victory in net for the Rams' was Ria Carroll, who made seven saves, while Lauren Malizia made four saves for the Explorers.

La Salle will host its final game on Sunday at 1 PM against Massachusetts and it will be Senior Day for the Explorers as they honor six players.
