Men's Soccer Deterred By Duquesne

Posted by: Shawn Sweeney

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The La Salle men's soccer team (6-8-3, 3-3-1 Atlantic 10) suffered its second consecutive 1-0 loss, this time at the hands of conference rival Duquesne (11-3, 5-1).

The Dukes struck in the 28th minute when Greg Annan's throw-in found the foot of Travis MacKenzie, who chipped the ball into the far right corner of the net.

With seven minutes left to play, the Explorers nearly tied the game. Senior Scott Golden (Tampa, FL/Jesuit) charged in on goal and unloaded a shot that looked destined to find twine. Duquesne goaltender Zach Varga sprawled out and barely got a piece of the ball, deflecting it out of bounds and, in turn, preserving the shutout.

Andrew Bernhard (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) stopped three shots between the pipes for La Salle; Varga made two saves for the Dukes. Duquesne held the edge in shots, 11-10.

The Explorers will return to action for their final home game of the season on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 1:00 p.m. when they host Saint Louis. Senior Day festivities will precede the game.
