Posted by: Sue SennerPHILADELPHIA, PA - The La Salle Explorer volleyball team picked up its first game win against an Atlantic 10 opponent in a 3-1 loss to the Charlotte 49ers. The Explorers lost by scores of 24-30, 31-29, 22-30, 16-30 and stand at 9-18 overall and
0-10 in the conference, while the 49ers improve to 15-12 overall and 7-3 in the A-10.
Sophomore Stephanie Owen turned in a team-high 14 kills for the Explorers. Christa Dominick and Abby Means each landed 10 kills to assist on La Salle's offense. Setter Caitlin Conner assisted on 45 of the Explorers 51 kills.
On defense, libero Carolyn Judge tallied 19 digs, while Caitlin Conner and Kristen Kelsey each added nine to La Salle's totals. At the net, Means and Dominick put up similar numbers, with Means getting one solo block and three assisted blocks to Dominick's one solo and two assisted.
For the 49ers, Abbey Szlanfucht turned in a match-high performance of 23 kills to go with a .413 hitting percentage (23-4-46). Charlotte also got an offense boost from Alma Arroyo and Jessica Oldenburg who contributed 15 kills apiece.
On defense, libero Carly Romberg finished with a match-high 29 digs and Szlanfucht added 12 to go with Arroyo's 11.
The Explorers will be back in action on Saturday, October 29th, when they host the George Washington Colonials at 5:00 p.m. Prior to the match, the volleyball team and La Salle Athletic Department will honor seniors Abby Means and Kara Branz for their four year careers for the Explorers.
