Golden's Goal Gives Explorers Tie With Saint Louis

Posted by: Shawn Sweeney

Golden put La Salle on the board in the 12th minute.

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The La Salle men's soccer team (6-8-4, 3-3-2 Atlantic 10) held off A-10 conference front-runners Saint Louis (8-5-2, 5-1-1) to preserve a 1-1 tie on Senior Day, keeping the Explorers playoff hopes alive. After La Salle saw a 1-0 slip away, the two teams battled back-and-forth for the remainder of the game, with neither squad able to find the back of the net.

The Explorers struck first when Matt Kelly (Philadelphia, PA/La Salle College HS) booted the ball downfield to senior Scott Golden (Tampa, FL/Jesuit) in the 12th minute. Golden turned and fired, blasting a low ball into the far left corner of the net, notching a goal in his final home game for La Salle.

The Billikens answered back in the 31st minute. After a scrum in front of the net off a throw-in, Ryan Wileman sent the ball through a maze of players, beating La Salle goalkeeper Andrew Bernhard (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield).

Bernhard stopped seven shots between for the Explorers; Jeff Sackman made two saves for Saint Louis, who held the edge in shots 20-5.

The Explorers will return to action for their final game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1:00 p.m. when they visit George Washington.
