Explorers compete at Head of the Schuylkill

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The men's and women's crew teams competed in the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta, a 4000-meter, or 2.5 mile, head race down river, on Saturday, October 29 in cold weather, but a tail wind made conditions bearable. The regatta drew many schools from outside of Philadelphia making the regatta one of the bigger races of the fall season.

La Salle's first race of the day was the Men's Heavy Championship Open Eight, comprised of James Keough, Jeff Laird, Adam Sutkus, Rob Quinn, Terrence McClain, Matt Bateman, Bill Lockard, Matt Loftus and coxswain Sarah Jones. The boat finished 19th out of 21 boats with a time of 13:25.84, as the New York Athletic Club took first place in 11:55.64.

Up second was the Women's Heavy Championship Open Eight, with Lauren Hokrein, Aimee Nichols, Lauren Corkery, Therese Pomeroy, Michelle Kukawski, Shannon Haley, Shauna Goetz, Jessie Lamont and coxswain Christina Spino. They finished with a time of 14:48.56, placing them 20th out of 22 boats, with the US Naval Academy winning in a time of 13:48.94.

La Salle's next boat, containing Paul LaPolla, Paul DeGrazia, Tom McGoldrick, Fiachra Malone and coxswain Steve Amarillo raced in the Men's College Freshman/Novice Four.  They took 10th out of 18 boats with a time of 16:23.23, behind first-place Columbia University, who finished 14:20.92.

The fourth race was the Men's Club Eight with Blaine Kneeshaw, Tim Brosius, Mark Ricciardi, Matt Tiedeken, Ryan Fair, Matt Sitcoske, Joe Scibetta, Terry DeAngelo and coxswain Francesca Cupo in the boar. They crossed the finish line in a time of 13:50.79, placing them 19th out of 33 boats. Crossing the line first was the Potomac Boat Club with a time of 12:21.60.

Next was the Women's Club Eight containing Kellie Nadeau, Becky Mahney, Liz McGrain, Rita Brown, Michelle DeLong, Kristin Weimar, Dani Fralen, Patrice Girard and coxswain Frankie Lamont. The boat finished with a time of 15:25.24 placing them 26th out of 45 boats, as the University of Pennsylvania won the race in a time of 14:08.97.

The last two races the Explorers competed in were the Men's and Women's Freshman/Novice Eight. The men, with Zach Coons, Pete Berenotto, Adam Sutkus, Matt Bateman, Terrence McClain, Bryan Schwartz, Rob Thomas, Brett Fair and coxswain Nicole Caronia in the boat, finished with a time of 12:27.85 placing them 21 out of 47 boats. Princeton University won the race in a time of 12:27.85. 

The women's boat comprised of Sarah Brown, Delia Spellman, Jen Sammartino, Kristin Weimar, Lauren Lantz, Andrea Bacchus, Jessie Lindsay, Molly Gatch and coxswain Colleen Green finished 15th out of 58 boats with a time of 15:54.39, as Columbia/Barnard Rowing took the race with a time of 14:32.21.

The La Salle Crew team next races on Saturday, November 12 at the Frostbite Regatta on the Schuylkill River.
