EASTON, PA - It was an overtime thriller at Lafayette's Rappolt Field on Tuesday night, at the La Salle Explorers went to overtime with the Leopards. After controlling a 4-3 lead late in the game, the Explorers ended up on falling 5-4 to the Leopards in the overtime period. La Salle now stands at 2-10 and the Leopards improved to 5-6.
La Salle's Allison Geiger sent the first ball into the middle of the cage after a strong pass from Colleen Nesbitt at the 10:26 mark to give the Explorers a 1-0 advantage. Just over three minutes later, at 13:27, Lafayette's Maggie Condon knocked in a rebound off of goalkeeper Ellen Axelsen to tie the score at 1-1.
Three minutes seemed to be the magic number, as Suzanne Strocen gave La Salle a go-ahead just over three minutes after Condon's goal at 16:35 to put the score at
2-1. Strocen connected on a pass from freshman Christy Miller after a scramble three yards out from the cage. The Leopards took almost four minutes to tie the score again after Lindsay Welch at the 18:25 mark.
Lafayette took its first lead of the contest when Diane Shane slipped the ball in the goal from the right post. Shane's goal closed out the first half scoring, with the Leopards holding a 3-2 lead going into the break.
The Explorers got back into the scoring mode when senior Emilie Stewart joined forces with Nesbitt and Amy Constock on a penalty corner to knot the score at 3-3 with 30:33 to go in regulation. La Salle freshman Whitney Madron scored her first collegiate goal at the 50:15 mark to give the Explorers a 4-3 lead.
Condon tied the scored again for the Leopards when she took the penalty corner and then received the ball from Maggie DeFilippo with 15:41 to play. Neither team was able to score in the last 15 plus minutes, forcing the game into an overtime situation.
It took just over nine minutes in the overtime period for Condon to find a pass from Amanda Eggleston to give the Leopards the 5-4 win.
The Explorers out shot the Leopards 19-14 and the teams were even on penalty corners with seven apiece.
Axelsen tallied four saves in the game, all coming in the first half. Lafayette's Jill Lambert who equaled Axelsen's 79:03 in goal allowed four goals and earned 10 saves.
The Explorers will return to action on Friday when they visit Atlantic 10 rival Saint Joseph's at 3:30 p.m.
