Caldwell Sets School Record at Rutgers Super Splash

- The Explorers closed out a three-day competition at the Rutgers Super Splash on Sunday afternoon at Sonny Werblin Recreation Center. In the end, the Explores finished with 370 points, good for a third place finish out of a field of 12 teams.

In the relay competition the 200 yard freestyle team of Carleen Caldwell, Rachel Sheridan, Jamie Polek and Shannon Halleran finished in third place behind Rutgers and Villanova with a time of 1: 40.09.  In the 400 medley relay, the team of Melanie Charles, Rachel Sheridan, Ashley Young and Caldwell posted a time of 4:10.76 and a ninth place finish.  Mallory Kessler, Sheridan, Young and Caldwell teamed up for a team-best time of 1:54.51 in the 200 yard medley relay and finished 11th overall.  Increasing the distance to the 800 yard freestyle relay, Caldwell, Polek, Sheridan and Young finished in seventh place with a time of 8:00.61. On the final day of competition, Caldwell swam a 52.91 leading off in the women's 400 freestyle relay and helped teammates Polek, Sheridan and Jaclyn Kubala finished in fourth place with a combined time of 3:38.19.

Polek turned in a team- best time of 5:11.86 in the 500 freestyle event, which was good for a 12th place finish.

Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, Caldwell set a school record on the final day of competition in the 100 yard freestyle recording a time of 52.91 on the opening leg of the 400 freestyle relay.  Caldwell also placed 8th overll in the 100 freestyle event with a time of 53.31. She also finished with a sixth place finish in the 50 freestyle in a time of 24:53.  Caldwell and Polek also swam well in the 200 yard freestyle, with Caldwell placing 7th with a time of 1:55.66 followed by Polek in ninth place with a time of 1:55.85. 

In the 400 yard individual medley, Young finished in a time of 4:44.28 in the finals to place 13th overall.  Young improved her preliminary time of 4:47.08 in the finals.

In the 100 yard backstroke, Charles crossed the finish line in a time of 1: 03.05 which was good for a 16th place finish and a La Salle best for the meet.

In the 1650 freestyle event, Young turned in a time of 17:52.86 and placed 10th, giving the Explorers 13 points for her effort. Young also contributed another 14 points with a ninth place finish in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:12.55.

Diver Katie Gifford finished in 6th place in the 3-meter event with a score of 388.95 and recorded a 10th place finish in the 1-meter event with a score of 187.65.

The Explorers will have more than a month off until their next meet at the Rhode Island Invitational on January 13, 2006.
