Posted by: Meaghann SchulteRichmond, VA - The Richmond Spiders remain undefeated in the Robins Center when playing the La Salle women's basketball team as the Explorers dropped their third straight tonight 75-51 in Richmond.
La Salle junior Davineia Payne (Bear,DE/Caravel Academy) recorded a team high 20 points, which marks the first time this season that the junior tallied back to back 20-point performances. Payne was an impressive 5-5 from the field in the first half, and made her first attempt of the second half until she missed a field goal in the game.
The Spiders took a 20-15 lead with 8:33left in the first half, but the Explorers held Richmond scoreless for the next two minutes and tied the game at 20 with 6:31 left in the period. The Explorers struggled offensively for the remainder of the half, scoring just three more points compared to 12 out of Richmond. La Salle went into the intermission trailing 32-23.
The Explorers came out with a spark scoring the first six points of the second half to bring the game to within three points, but Richmond quickly took a 10 point lead by the 16:06 mark. La Salle brought the game to within nine points with 13:37 remaining in the game, but the Spiders went on a 6-0 run and took their largest lead of the game so far 49-35 with 10:37 left.
La Salle would only score 16 points in the remainder of the game and went scoreless in the final 2:27 of the period. The Explorers fall to 10-14 on the season and 4-9 in the conference while RIchmond improves to 19-5 overall ans 10-3 in the A-10.
La Salle sophomore Crista Ricketts (Douglasville, PA/Daniel Boone) tallied 12 points in the loss and pulled down seven boards. Payne led the Explorers in rebounding with eight. Senior Meghan Wilkinson (Downingtown, PA/DOwningtown) drained three three pointers in the game for nine points and junior Shaune McLaughlin (Somers Point, NJ/Mainland/Regional) dished out a team high four assists.
La Salle returns home to host the Duquesne Dukes this Sunday, February 20th for a 12:00 p.m. tip-off.
