Explorers Get Win With 3-2 Defeat of Monmouth


Philadelphia, PA - The La Salle University baseball team tallied its third victory on four games defetaing the Monmouth Hawks 3-2 today Tuesday, March 22nd at Hank DeVincent Field on the campus of La Salle University.

La Salle senior Ryan Parfit (Flourtown, PA/La Salle) tripled in the bottom of the first inning and then scored on a passed ball to give the Explorers their first run of the game.

The Explorers held on to the lead until the top of the fourth inning and never trailed in the game. Monmouth tied the score at one off an unearned run in the top of the fourth, but La Salle answered right back to take a 2-1 lead heading into the fifth inning.

La Salle sophomore Billy Kern (Northfield, NJ/Mainland) singled through the left side and then stole second base. Junior George Hudock then singled to left field sending Kern to third base. Sophomore Rich Prall then stepped to the plate looking to take the lead back and singled to the right field sending Kern home and regaining the lead.

Monmouth did not give up without a battle as the Hawks again tied the game this time at two in the top of the fifth inning off a one run homer. La Salle answered again and scored the last run of the game in the bottom of he fifth to take a 3-2 lead.

La Salle sophomore John Vincent started the inning off with a double to center field, but found himself in the same spot after junior Mike Essery struck out and Parfit flied out. Kern then stepped to the plate and singled sending Vincent to third, he then scored after Monmouth's second baseman threw the ball out of reach of the first baseman to give the Explorers the lead.

The victory over Monmouth is the third win in four games for La Salle improving the Explorers to 4-12-0 on the season. La Salle will travel to Delaware State this Thursday, March 24th for a 2:30 PM contest.
