Philadelphia, PA - The La Salle University softball team dropped both ends of a sunrise-sunset double-header to Fordham as they opened their 2005 Atlantic 10 schedule at Good Shepherd Field. They lost the first game, 6-1, and the second 1-0 on a run in the top of the seventh.
In game one, sophomore Laura DeZolt (Morrisville, PA/Conwell Egan) took the mound for a not-so-bright but early contest that commenced at 9:45 A.M.. The Rams jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third, but the Explorers answered in the fourth when Liz Greenfield (New York, NY/John F. Kennedy) launched a solo homerun over the left field fence to cut the deficit to 3-1. It was her first homer of the year.
In addition to the homer, Greenfield also singled to finish 2-3 in the game.
In game two, freshman Carissa Segura (Santa Maria, CA/Ernest Righetti) pitched seven strong innings, allowing only one run, but the Explorers weren't able to muster much offense. Their best chance came when Segura was abandoned on third in the bottom of the fifth.
Ram's leadoff hitter Krystle Henry manufactured the only RBI of the game with a smash down the third-base line that barely eluded Sara Punderson (Island Heights, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) in the final inning.
Explorer left fielder Katie Bongiovanni (Mancester, NJ/Manchester Township) went 2-3 in the second game.
La Salle will return to action on Tuesday, March 29 when they travel to George Washington.
