Washington, DC-The La Salle University softball team traveled to George Washington University this afternoon for an Atlantic 10 double header with the Colonials. They were beaten, 7-4, in the first game and 4-3 in the second.
In the opener, sophomore Katie Bongiovanni (Manchester, NJ/Manchester Twp.) went 3-4 with a double and two RBI. After a scoreless first, the Explorers built a 1-0 lead on Bongiovanni's double to right-center that plated catcher Michelle Sullivan (Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro).
However, the Colonials then reeled off six unanswered runs to seal the game. La Salle scored two runs in their half of the seventh, but was never able to erase the deficit.
Laura DeZolt (Morrisville, PA/Conwell Egan) allowed five earned runs in five innings to take the loss. She helped herself at the plate, going 2-4 with a run scored.
In the second game, George Washington jumped out to a 4-0 lead and was able to hold off another late charge from the visitors. La Salle scored three in the top of the sixth to make it interesting, keyed by singles from Meg Berry (Rutherford, NJ/Paramus Catholic) and DeZolt.
Freshman Carissa Segura (Santa Maria, CA/Ernest Righetti) allowed three earned runs and had five strikeouts in the loss.
The Explorers are now 4-16-1 overall and 0-4 in the conference. They return to action on Thursday, March 31 when they host Manhattan at Good Shepherd Field beginning at 2:00 P.M..
