Essery, Burge Boost Explorers Over Hawks

Philadelphia, PA - The La Salle University baseball team prevented a three game sweep by the Hawks as they defeated Saint Joseph's 3-2 today, Sunday April 10th.

The Explorers scored first as sophomore Billy Kern singled and advanced to second on a throwing error, scoring freshman Matt Dunaway who had reached on a previous single through the right side.

The Hawks went scoreless in the first inning, but managed to score two in the second inning and take a 2-1 lead, which they held on to until La Salle freshman Dennis Burge tied the game up at two in the fifth inning. Burge doubled down the left field line and junior Mike Essery moved Burge to third on a sacrafice bunt. Dunaway, who finished the game 1-4 with an RBI and a run scored, got out at first on a fielder's choice which sent Burge home for the second run of the game for the Explorers.

The game would remain tied at two until the seventh inning when Burge and Essery again combined for an Explorer run. Burge tripled to left field and Essery hit his second sacrafice bunt of the game to score Burge and give the Explorers the 3-2 lead and eventually victory.

Senior Anthony Boscaglia started on the mound for La Salle. He combined with relief pitchers freshman Craig Mushko and sophomore Gerard Breslin struck out 12 total batters. Muchko led the charge with six strike outs while Breslin added four. Breslin records his sixth save of the year after pitching in the final three innings.

The Explorers improve to 11-17 overall and 5-4 in the conference and will host Temple this Tuesday, April 12th at 3:30 p.m. at Hank DeVincent Field.
