Poughkeepsie, NY-The La Salle University softball team traveled north this afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader with Marist College. They dropped the first game, 10-2, and the second, 2-1.
In the opener, the Explorers were unable to get on the board until the sixth inning when senior Sarah Punderson (Island Heights, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) singled to centerfield to score Kathy Hennessey (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) and Megan Berry (Rutherford, NJ/Paramus Catholic).
Sophomore Laura DeZolt (Morrisville, PA/Conwell Egan) was charged with the loss despite striking out nine. Only seven of her runs were earned.
In the second game, Marist scored a dramatic run in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the sweep. Prior to that, the Explorers had tied the game, 1-1, on Punderson's RBI single to left field that scored leadoff hitter Vinnie Caputo (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs).
Senior Kassandra Keating (Fair Oaks, CA/Bella Vista) pitched the first six innings and allowed just one earned run on four hits. She was relieved by Carissa Segura (Santa Maria, CA/Ernest Righetti), who surrendered the winning single.
The Explorers will be back in action on Friday, April 22nd when they travel to Dayton for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 P.M..
