Posted by: Michelle DeLongDespite the cloudless sky, rowers and coxswains did battle a very strong headwind and choppy race course on Saturday. On Sunday the wind cooperated to provide a tailwind.
The Knecht Cup is a 2000-meter race that was held on April 16th and 17th. The regatta is held on the Cooper River in Collingswood, New Jersey and La Salle was entered in the men's and women's freshman/novice eight and the men's and women's varsity eight.
The first race of the day was the women's freshman/novice eight of Sarah Turner, Becky Mahney, Dani Fralen, Rita Brown, Delia Spellman, Sarah Brown, Jenn Sammartino, Jessie Lamont and coxswain Melanie Charles. They finished their heat in third place with a time of 8:59.20 which qualified them for semi-finals Saturday afternoon. The boat went on to finish fifth in their semi-final with a time of 8:39.00 behind crews of Kansas, University of Massachusetts, Princeton and first place University of Connecticut (8:10.40). The women did qualify to race in third finals on Sunday where they defeated Boston College and West Virginia with a time of 7:51.00.
The men's freshman/novice eight of Blaine Kneershaw, Matt Loftus, Joe Scibetta, James Keough, Mike Rockwood, Rob Quinn, Chris Foran, Tim Brocchus and coxswain Francesca Cupo finished their heat in third place and posted a time of 7:39.60 behind Fairfield and first place New York Maritime which finished with a time of 7:20.66. The men qualified to row in the semi-finals Saturday afternoon and they finished 5th out of six crews. However, the men were eligible to row in petite finals on Sunday and finishing in 6th place with a time of 6:52.80.
The men's varsity eight containing Mark Ricciardi, Sean Ahern, Matt Ryan, Jeff Laird, Bill Lockard, Mike Malloy, Ryan Fair, Matt Tiedeken and coxswain Sara Jones finished their heat in fifth place with a time of 7:30.10. The men did, however, qualify to row in petite finals on Sunday. They beat George Mason placing fifth with a time of 6:35.60 but behind first place Delaware with a time of 6:13.70.
Suzanne Patackis, Kelly Zavertnik, Shauna Goetz, Therese Pomeroy, Liz McGrain, Kellie Nadeau, Rose Fisher, Aimee Nichols and coxswain Kellie Fagan comprise the women's varsity eight which was the fourth race of the day. The women finished their heat with a time of 8:36.10, beating Iona's time but was behind other crews such as University of Connecticut, Colgate, UC Davis and first place University of Rhode Island which posted a time of 7:57.80. La Salle's time did not qualify for semi-finals.
