Philadelphia, PA-The La Salle University softball team hosted the University of Maryland Eastern Shore for a double-header this afternoon at Good Shepherd Field. They obliterated the Hawks, 13-1, in the opener, and won the second, 11-7, to complete the sweep.
In the first game, the Explorers (9-29-1) pounded out 16 hits, including a pair of homeruns from shortstop Vinnie Caputo (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs). Home plate resembled a crosswalk in the third and fourth innings as La Salle scored five and six runs, respectively, to put the game out of reach.
Laura DeZolt (Morrisville, PA/Conwell Egan) went the distance for the victory, her fourth of the season. She struck out 10 in five innings of work, including six straight at one point. She was also 3-3 at the plate.
Also contributing offensively were Katie Bongiovanni (Manchester, NJ/Manchester Twp.), who homered in the second inning, and Kathy Hennessey (Sparta, NJ/Sparta), who was 3-3 with 3 RBI.
In the second game, the Explorers fell behind 3-0 before scoring eight unanswered runs. Michelle Sullivan (Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) ignited the comeback with a grand-slam and finished the day 3-4 with two homers and 6 RBI. Megan Berry (Rutherford, NJ/Paramus Catholic) also homered and scored three runs.
Senior Kassandra Keating (Fair Oaks, CA/Bella Vista) earned the victory, her second of the season. She struck out four and scattered eight hits.
