Explorers Downed by Delaware

The La Salle University softball team traveled to Delaware this afternoon for a double-header with the Blue Hens.  They lost the first game, 4-2, and the second, 1-0.

In the opener, the Explorers fell behind 4-0 before sophomore Laura DeZolt (Morrisville, PA/Conwell Egan) ripped a triple in the top of the third to score Sarah Punderson (Island Heights, NY/Monsignor Donovan), who had reached on a fielder's choice.

The score remained 4-1 until the top of the fifth when catcher Michelle Sullivan (Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro H.S.) singled up the middle to score shortstop Vinnie Caputo (Sarasota Springs, NY/Sarasota Springs), who led off the inning with a single to left.

DeZolt was charged with the loss.  She allowed four earned runs on nine hits in six innings of work.

In the second game, the scoreboard remained clear until the final inning when Delaware freshman Katie Lee scored on an error to end the game.  Freshman Carissa Segura (Santa Maria, CA/Ernest Righetti) went the distance on the mound and did not allow an earned run.  DeZolt had a strong second game, going 2-2 with a double.

With the losses, the Explorers drop to 4-20-1 on the season.  Ten of those losses have been by only one run.

The squad will return to action on Thursday, April 7th when they host Monmouth at Good Shepherd Field beginning at 3:00 P.M..
