EASTON, PA - The La Salle University women's lacrosse team got back to its winning ways on Tuesday evening when they handed the Lafayette Leopards a 16-4 loss. The Explorers improve to 6-5 overall, while the Leopards remain winless at 0-8.
Freshman Emily Bonczek (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) scored six goals, including five in the first 14:20 to lead the Explorers to victory.
Bonczek, the leading scorer in the Atlantic 10, ignited an Explorer offense that found the back of the net four times in the first seven minutes and staked the visitors to a 10-3 halftime lead.
The Explorers also got three goals from Kristen Davis (Folsom, PA/Ridley). Senior Kate Henwood (Glen Mills, PA/Garnett Valley), the teams second leading scorer notched two goals, as did Becky Boudwin (Springfield, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) and Kat Prokop (Towaco, NJ/Montville Township). Rounding out the La Salle goals was Leah Wheeler (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown).
Lafayette freshman Madalyn Booth scored a pair of unassisted goals in the first half for Lafayette, while junior Kaleigh Mountain added a pair of goals in the loss. Mountain's second tally, the Leopards' lone goal of the second half, came courtesy of a Booth assist. Booth leads Lafayette in points (15) and assists (5) and ranks second in goals (10).
La Salle (6-5) scored the game's first five goals, then strung together five more to lead 10-1 midway through the first period. The Leopards scored twice late in the half to cut the deficit to 10-3 at halftime.
The Explorers out-scored Lafayette 6-1 after halftime to pull away.
La Salle held a 36-16 advantage in shots and 15-7 edge in draw controls.
The Explorers head to Massachusetts to take on the Minutewomen on Friday in an Atlantic 10 Conference game at 3:00 p.m.
